Busy vs. Diligent

One word that is consistently being thrown around in any given week is the word “BUSY”. I have noticed that as you engage in conversation with people concerning the details of their lives and schedule there seems to be a satisfying and yet heavy response to the question “hows things?” They come back with what sounds like, “man, just staying busy.” I understand the intention of this answer, but it seems as if the rebuttal is undesired and forced. One of the definitions of busy is, “full of distracting detail”. The key word in that definition is distracting. The devil can’t defeat us but he can distract us.

I heard a minister say that busy is Being Under Satan’s Yoke. I like that

Hebrews 11:4 says, “Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest…” The word diligent is defined as… steady, earnest, and energetic effort. To be STEADY is the key. When we listen to the voice of the Lord and allow Him to direct our steps our only job is to be diligent. To be steady. Stay put, and use every tool God has given you to energetically accomplish His will. Don’t add to it and don’t allow yourself to become distracted by being busy on matters that don’t concern you.

Luke 10:38-42 is one of my favorite stories. Martha is complaining to Jesus how Mary has left her with all the work. Jesus responds to her saying, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!” Martha had become BUSY instead of being diligent. Diligence listens to the Word and allows the word to work.

Take time, like Mary to sit at the feet of Jesus and become DILIGENT as you listen to the Master word, and don’t allow the BUSY details to distract you from entering into His rest.
